Portraits: Francine Gilmore

Francine Gilmore plays the flute with the F-M Golden Notes New Horizons Band on Wednesday at the Cooperative Living center in West Fargo. The 65-year-old Moorhead Realtor played flute through junior high, high school and college before taking a 41-year break. Gilmore had loaned her flute to her niece and was able to get it back when she decided to take it up again. “I couldn’t remember the fingering,” Gilmore said. “I thought, ‘I’m never going to be able to do this.’” So she found a flute instructor. “She gave me three lessons and I figured that was good enough.” That was three years ago. Gilmore has been playing with the band ever since. She says the band is “so caring and so giving” and she values her time with it. “The music just brings joy to my soul. I just love it. I really do,” Gilmore says. “It means a lot. It means a lot to everyone that’s here.” Band members are at least 55 years old, with one current member who is 94. The band rehearses Monday evenings and usually has a monthly concert. Musicians interested in joining the band should call band manager Jim Kinlaw at 701-237-5366.
