Demons defeat Deacons in Class A third-place game

FARGO – Both Bismarck and Fargo Shanley made lengthy scoring runs, and each had leads during the second half, but it was the Demons who prevailed.

Naomi Rust posted 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Bismarck over Shanley 49-44 in the third-place game of the North Dakota Class A state girls basketball tournament on Saturday at the Fargodome.

“We just really wanted it,” Rust said. “Both teams were tired. I think you could see that with the points that were put up. We just finished the game for ourselves.”

After a scoreless opening four minutes, the Demons went on a 15-2 run. Shanley didn’t record a field goal until Kelly Weir hit a layup with 7 minutes, 4 seconds left in the first half. Weir’s basket ignited a 12-0 Deacons run.

“It was a good run,” Fargo Shanley head coach Tim Jacobson said. “We were a little more controlled and a little more patient, but we just missed too many easy ones. That tolls on you after a while.”

The Demons led 18-15 at halftime and started the second half on a 6-0 run.

The Deacons answered and took their first lead of the game when Jessica Anderson scored to make it 32-31 with 10 minutes left to play.

Shanley took a 41-37 lead after eighth-grader Sarah Jacobson hit three shots on consecutive possessions.

Keisha Englehardt converted a three-point play and Rylee Meier added a layup giving the Demons the lead back.

Alivia Fraase split a pair of free throws to make it 42-all with 2:49 left to play.

Rust broke the tie with two free throws and the Demons never trailed after that.

“We fought and kept battling back,” Tim Jacobson said. “Defensively, we played well all tournament. The last few minutes when you’re gambling, you’re going to risk giving up layups, and we did.”

Fraase scored 11 points off the bench to pace the Deacons, who finish the season 19-6.
