Cobber women ousted by RIT in quarterfinalsROCHESTER, N.Y. – The latest stride made by the Concordia women’s hockey program came to an end Saturday, as the Cobbers lost 5-2 to Rochester Institute of Technology in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III women’s hockey tournament.
The national tournament berth was a first for Concordia.
“It was great to get here, but I don’t think we’re satisfied with the outcome,” Cobbers head coach Brett Bruininks said. “We’d like to continue to work hard and get back here again.”
The Cobbers were outshot 35-13. But early on, they made the most of their opportunities.
RIT scored first, but Concordia answered with two goals in a 1 minute, 18 second span late in the first period to net a 2-1 lead. The goals by Breann Julius and Kelsey Vandegrift were the Cobbers’ only two shots on net in the first period.
After tying the game in the second period, RIT scored three times in the third period. Kolbee McCrea scored a hat trick for RIT, which included the go-ahead goal early in the period.
“I think we just played hard,” Bruininks said. “We killed off a lot of penalties in the second (period), and that took a lot of gas.”
The Cobbers finish the season at 15-6-5. RIT improves to 26-1-1 and advances to Friday’s semifinal round.
“We graduate five, and that’s five very key players,” Bruininks said when discussing the team’s prospects next season. “We’ll never replace them, but hopefully we can supplement our current roster. One thing you can say about our seniors is they’ve been a huge part of this team’s success.”
