Deacons advance at ND Class A state boys basketball

FARGO – Fargo Shanley didn’t have the start it wanted, but it made adjustments to produce its desired finish.

The Deacons transitioned into a press defense in the second half and junior A.J. Jacobson scored 21 points, leading to a 74-62 win over Minot in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A state boys basketball tournament on Thursday at the Fargodome.

The Magicians were clicking early on offense with 6-foot-4 center Colter Hustad scoring 10 of his 14 points in the first half.

“We really couldn’t stop them in the inside,” Shanley head coach Leon Knodel said. “We tried to switch up the pace a little bit in the second half by pressing them and hopefully getting them in a running-type game, which favors us. Obviously what we were doing in the first half wasn’t working.”

East Region No. 1-seeded Shanley (18-5) advances to play Wahpeton in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today.

While Minot was knocking down shots, the Deacons were struggling from the field, shooting 31 percent in the first half.

“Shots not falling from the outside is one thing, but we were getting to the basket and not finishing,” Knodel said. “I told the guys at halftime we got to finish like men, be ready to take some contact and finish around the basket. I think we did a much better job of that in the second half.”

Shanley had four players score in double figures. Dylan Alderman added 18 points for the Deacons. Thomas Strandemo and Patrick Strom scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Alderman scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to spark the Deacons.

“They were slowing us down and we wanted to get up and down the court,” Alderman said. “So we came out and started playing our game … Getting our guys easy ones, seeing the balls go through the hoop and then getting our outside shooters going.”

Austin Frank paced the Magicians with 17 points. Minot (13-10) plays Bismarck in the consolation semifinals at 4 p.m. today at the Bison Sports Arena.
