Berg: Von Furstenberg launches GapKids line

FARGO - Diane Von Furstenberg has always been one of my favorite designers. While working at Barneys New York, I picked up many of her gorgeous signature wrap dresses throughout the years.

So when I heard DVF was doing a line for GapKids, I was beyond excited. All those years of wearing these chic dresses and now my 2-year-old daughter could, too? It’s a fashionista mama’s dream.

When the line hits stores March 15, it will be available at select stores international and throughout the U.S. But the best news is our very own Fargo GapKids at West Acres Shopping Center will carry DVF clothes for tots.

Von Furstenberg became famous for her wrap dress in the 1970’s. The pure simplicity, perfect kimono-like fit and amazing silhouette has made her jersey wrap dress a hit for decades. In fact, the dress was deemed so influential that it resides in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Now, you can turn your little girl into a mini fashion icon with her pint-sized version of the wrap dress. The oh-so chic frock comes in array of prints and colors. My favorite is a green and black print. Style it with her super chic black wrap sandals and it’s a definite must have.

Diane’s exclusive collection also includes adorable DVF heart logo embellished T-shirts, high-top tennis shoes, shift dresses and onsies. The DVF shorts, leggings and rompers come in bright, fun colors and prints. One of my favorite pieces is a super cute seersucker blazer with patchwork details – so cute with shorts or leggings.

The line ranges from sizes for newborns to age 14, and runs $20 to $45. A special DVF diaper bag (sold only online) will cost you $120.

The collection’s bright colors and bold prints exude strength, confidence and optimism. Von Furstenberg says her kid’s line for Gap is all about celebrating life and color – “to empower a little girl is to empower the woman she will become,” Von Furstenberg says of the line.

For anyone who thinks fashion cannot have a positive effect on a child, I disagree. How a child feels about themselves on the inside, as well as the outside, can contribute to their confidence. After all, how we represent ourselves to the world shows how we feel about ourselves.

Let your little girl’s spirit shine from the inside out. My mini fashionista and I will be there the minute the store opens March 15.
