Dorow’s free throw lifts Spuds in OTST. MICHAEL, Minn. – The bucket that pushed the Moorhead boys basketball team to a berth in the section semifinals came from an unlikely source with plenty of potential.
Cody Dorow’s free throw with less than a second left in overtime was his only point of the game. And that point gave the fifth-seeded Spuds a 56-55 victory against fourth-seeded St. Michael-Albertville in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Class 4A, Section 8 tournament.
Moorhead’s Michael Weiss hit a game-tying
3-pointer late in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The two teams traded baskets in overtime. And with the Knights holding for the last shot in the extra session and the score tied 55-55, a St. Michael-Albertville player missed a shot in the final seconds.
Dorow, a freshman, grabbed the rebound and was fouled by a Knights player after coming down with the ball and just .5 seconds left on the clock.
Dorow missed the first of two free-throw attempts but made the second to put the Spuds in front for good.
“We’ve noticed throughout the season that he’s a kid that lives in the moment of the game,” Moorhead head coach Corey Zimmerman said of Dorow. The first one (he missed), and I knew he had the confidence to gather himself and hit that second one. He’s shown he has a little bit of a swagger and he’ll be a special player in the future.”
The Spuds will face either No. 8 seed Brainerd or No. 1 seed Buffalo in the section semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cloud State.
