Noreen, Sannes push Hawley to subsection final victory

MOORHEAD – Sometimes sparks are needed just to get warm.

Jessy Noreen and Drew Sannes did enough to ignite their team’s fire. Noreen cut a 10-point lead to two points at halftime while Sannes scored six points to open the second half. The sparks helped the Hawley girls basketball team to a 47-41 win over Pelican Rapids on Tuesday in the Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 subsection final at Concordia College.

Hawley (24-3) will face Pequot Lakes on Friday in the section final.

“I felt like things were getting better for our team,” Sannes said of the second-half start. “Once we get a spark going, we don’t like to let it stop.”

Hawley opened the second half on a 15-2 run, dominating on both ends of the floor.

Sannes’ six straight points made the Vikings (23-6) concentrate on the paint, freeing up space for mid-range jumpers. She finished with 11 points all of them coming in the second half.

The Nuggets took advantage of those open looks outside the paint to pad the lead, along with playing tight defense.

Early in the second half, Hawley’s defense made an inbounds pass or getting the ball over half court a challenge.

“I think we played Nugget basketball,” said Nuggets coach Bill Gottenborg about his team’s second-half revival. “That means making plays and making plays for each other.”

Senior center Jenny Ritter was an example of Gottenborg’s philosophy.

Ritter continually set screens and then when it was her turn, she drilled a jumper for a 35-20 lead about midway through the half. It was Ritter’s only shot of the game.

Pelican Rapids eventually broke through finding ways to score ,but the closest it came was six points.

It wasn’t that way early on. Pelican Rapids jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 7:01 left in the first half.

That’s when Noreen stepped up. Noreen began slashing to the inside, getting easy baskets to help Hawley gnaw the lead to 18-16 at halftime.

“We split with Pelican this season and shared the conference title,” said Noreen, who finished with 16 points. “We knew it was going to be tough, but we just couldn’t give up. We knew we’d have to play two halves.”
