Clever diversion at White EarthIt is election time on the White Earth Indian Reservation. There are many issues that need to be brought to light, but have been overshadowed by the urban casino proposal by Chairwoman Erma Vizenor.
One of the issues that I see as very relevant during this time is the abuse of prescription pain medication and illegal substances. What is being done by the current Tribal Council to help with this ever-growing problem? The Reservation Tribal Council has issued a proclamation declaring that a collaboration of all RTC entities has been formed to fight this problem. This is a step in the right direction, but the proclamation is only as good as the paper on which it is written.
We need action, not words. It doesn’t help the situation when all of the media’s focus has been turned from real problems to somebody’s pipe dream. A story needs to be done on the real situation here at White Earth, not the distorted dream of a few.
