Central Cass takes lead early, wins big

LISBON, N.D. – Central Cass’ offense didn’t wait around long to get in a groove.

The Squirrels scored the game’s first 23 points in a 67-37 win over Hankinson during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 girls basketball tournament on Monday at Lisbon High School.

“That’s what we emphasized in the pregame. Coming out and being ready right away,” Central Cass head coach Ryan Mears said. “That was the big thing. Come out right away and set the tone.”

Central Cass advances to play Northern Cass at 8 p.m. today.

Hankinson’s Betsy Asp scored the Pirates’ first points on a layup with 2 minutes, 30 second remaining in the first quarter.

Central Cass led 25-3 after the first quarter and had a 41-15 advantage at halftime.

The Squirrels’ defense forced the Pirates into many turnovers early, which led to easy baskets in transition. Hankinson committed 23 turnovers in the game.

“We got a lot of easy 2s, but then we were able to knock down some shots against their zone,” Mears said. “We hit some outside shots and knocking down those shots right away helped build the confidence of the girls.”

Hannah Breske led all scorers with 19 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Bethany Voss added nine points for Central Cass (21-2).

Asp paced the Pirates with 13 points. Hankinson finishes the year (4-18).
