Kindred defeats Lisbon in Region 1 girls basketball quarterfinals

LISBON, N.D. – Kindred has used its press defense to spark its offense and force opponents into poor decisions all season long.

The press helped the Vikings build an early lead Monday that they never gave up in a 58-39 win over Lisbon in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 girls basketball tournament at Lisbon High School.

Kindred advances to play Maple Valley in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today.

“Our pressure got to them a little bit early,” said Kindred head coach Perry Piatz. “We got a decent lead and we just kind of stayed there.”

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Vikings (21-1) outscored the Broncos 17-6 in the second quarter, giving Kindred a 30-13 at halftime.

Lisbon out rebounded Kindred 40-36 and 21 of the Broncos’ rebounds were offensive, a stat that kept the Vikings from extending their lead.

“Offensive rebounds killed us,” Piatz said. “… That’s not a good thing, but give Lisbon a lot of credit. They played hard and out-hustled us in a lot of aspects.”

Kellie Schmit paced Kindred with 18 points. Braidy Dahl and Brooke Graff each added 16 and 11 points, respectively, for the Vikings.

Graff connected for three 3-pointers.

Kindred defeated Maple Valley 56-35 and 75-37 in two meetings during the regular season.

“The first two times we played (Maple Valley) we put a lot of pressure on them because they are young,” Piatz said. “Hopefully those young kids don’t handle the pressure very well and hopefully that leads to easy baskets, which it has in the first two games. Now when we play them a third time, I’m sure they’ll make some adjustments.”

Sarah Carlson scored 10 points for the Broncos, who end their season 9-14.
