Barnesville nets sixth-place finish at Minnesota state wrestling

ST. PAUL – Feelings can’t be displayed in a trophy case, but there’s no doubting this was a memorable year.

The Barnesville wrestling team, having never made it this far, finished sixth following a 41-22 loss to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in the Class 1A team competition at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

“We have nothing to be ashamed of,” said Trojans coach Art Meyer. “We came to battle. I think we having nothing to hang our heads on, and its going to help us for the future and for the next few years. The goal will be to make some noise the next time we are down here.”

Barnesville (23-6) might not walk away with a top-five finish, but it walks away knowing this could be the start of something big.

This was the Trojans’ first state tournament appearance since the program was founded in 1965.

The reward was facing Kimball Area, which has gained the reputation of being a powerhouse.

Kimball Area beat Barnesville 55-9, but Barnesville bounced back. It pulled off a thrilling 11-point victory over Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

Then came the fifth-place match against the Vikings, which have finished in the top five the last three seasons.

LC-WM jumped out to a 24-3 lead. Barnesville cut the deficit to eight, but LC-WM went on to pad its lead and snag its second fifth-place title in three years.

“There were some breaks we didn’t get, like we thought at 106 (pounds) we should have had the pin, but they got it instead,” Meyer said. “At 138, we got punched in the face. You can’t blame it on the ref, but we fought hard.”

Now here’s the fun part for Barnesville.

Meyer and Co. only lose two wrestlers from this season’s team and have more wrestlers coming in the system.

Trojans sophomore Jace Nosal, who has been in the system since fourth grade, said more kids are considering wrestling as an option, something they didn’t do in previous years.

“I think we are starting to become a wrestling school,” Nosal said. “I really think we are.”

Making school history. Finishing sixth in the state. The promise of a better future.

These are things to get excited about. So is the progression of junior Stuart Brandt.

Brandt came into the section tournament as the No. 4 seed only to win the event.

He was easily Barnesville’s strongest wrestler, winning every match on Thursday.

“You can quote this, put it in the paper, I don’t care,” Brandt said. “We’re going to be back here next year.”
