Perham drops two matches at Minnesota state wrestling
Perham (21-7) made its seventh state appearance, but consecutive losses resulted in the program walking away empty-handed on Thursday in the team competition of the Minnesota state wresting tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.
“Every time we’ve been down here, we leave because someone made us,” said longtime Perham assistant Wayne Werner. “Even when we finished second one year, we still didn’t get to leave the way we wanted to.”
The Yellowjackets attempts at making a run for a medal were severely hindered following a 43-10 loss to Kasson-Mantorville. They had about a 10-minute window to clear their heads before taking on Milaca in the consolation semifinals in the hopes of getting fifth-place medals.
Milaca at one point was up by 12 before coming away with a 32-26 win.
“We told our guys they have tomorrow,” Werner said referring to today’s individual tournament. “It’s now time to stop worrying about the team and time to be selfish.”
Werner said Perham has six individuals competing today.
Yellowjackets head coach Robb Moser said he wanted to use the opening-round loss as a teaching tool.
Moser said a good place to start was Kasson-Mantorville’s approach to the match.
He said the Comets use a college style, allowing them to wear down opponents.
“They take your head, beat it against the mat,” Moser said. “They do it again and again and again. Then they wear you out.”
The Comets won the first three matches, and at one point had a 34-3 lead. The Yellowjackets did win two of the last four matches, picking up wins from Garrett Biegler (182 pounds) and Cody Nylander (220).
A rough start was ended with a surprising finish when Jesse Hein lost for the first time all season.
“They are a tough team and we knew coming in we’d have to wrestle a perfect match,” said Hein, who qualified for the individual tournament. “We didn’t.”
