Effort pays off: Moorhead sending five to state meet
“Five is the most Moorhead has ever sent to the individual tournament,” Toops said. “We even tied for the most kids sent to individuals from our section.”
The Spuds are sending Kenny Mark (120 pounds), Jacob Rositas (126), Joe Carpenter (152), A.J. Wheeler (170) and Chase Morlock (182) to the tournament.
Toops said sending five kids to the tournament is a byproduct of having coachable kids who don’t mind hard work, are good listeners and rely on multiple mental techniques to prepare for state.
“I wrestled at New London-Spicer and qualified as a senior but lost my first match,” Toops said. “The guy I wrestled, who was No. 1 in the state, lost in the next round and it meant I was out. We’ve talked to our kids a lot about controlling their destiny.”
Toops said he and his staff have also talked about enjoying the moment.
“What we have talked about is for our kids to be happy to get to state but to not be content,” he said. “Our goal is to go down there and have everyone place. We keep hammering that home. Be happy. Be proud. Just don’t be content.”
