WATCH NOW: Valley City police officer being investigated
Valley City Police Officer Randy Schmidt is being investigated for possibly using excessive force in an alleged altercation over the weekend. The Valley City City Attorney says the incident has been referred to the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Russell Myhre – City Attorney, Valley City: “Officer Schmidt has been put on paid administrative leave pursuant to our employee policy and that will continue until this matter is resolved.”
City Attorney Russell Myhre says the alleged altercation happened early Sunday Morning at the VFW in Valley City. Myhre says Schmidt was off-duty after working security at this weekend's Mixed Martial Arts Event. It is unclear at this point as to whether alcohol was a factor.
Russel Myhre: “Essentially police officers are on duty 24-7, that's the way that we pay them, that's what we expect of them. So we do expect them to react to situations if they were police officers, regardless of whether they are on duty or off duty.”
We reached out to the Valley City Police Department and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Both said they would not comment during an ongoing investigation. We spoke with the alleged victim, but that person did not want to do an interview.
