Grovers' rally comes up short

FARGO – Fargo Oak Grove’s 13-0 run in the final five minutes of regulation provided plenty of thrills.

But the rally didn’t net the Grovers a win.

Northern Cass’ Lexi Zieske scored 10 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Jaguars to a 53-50 win over Oak Grove in a Class B, Region 1 qualifying girls basketball game during the District 2 tournament on Monday at the Fargo Civic Center.

The Jaguars move on to the Region 1 tournament next Monday at Lisbon High School.

Trailing 43-33 with 4:42 left in regulation, the Grovers called a timeout which got the comeback started.

Oak Grove sophomore Rachel Osmundson drained a field goal that cut the Jaguars’ lead to two and followed with a 3-pointer that gave the Grovers the lead.

“It’s always good to see your team respond,” Fargo Oak Grove head coach Jared Bledsoe said. “I expected them to respond and it was positive to see them fight back.”

Zieske ended the rally with a field goal and tied the game 48-all converting a three-point play with 1:01 left.

The Northern Cass junior hit three key free throws down the stretch that sealed the victory.

“When Oak Grove came back, I knew if the girls played with their composure like they know how to, they would know what to do,” Northern Cass head coach Jody Zieske said. “That’s exactly what they did. They knew they had to pick it up and get some quick points.”

Paige Verwest added nine points for Northern Cass (16-6).

Tatum Holt (14 points), Jordan Cain (13) and Osmundson (15) scored in double figures for the Grovers who finish the season 11-10.

Richland 47

Even after his team got out to a nice start against Richland, Maple Valley coach Jeff Miller wanted more.

The Raiders posted a 57-47 win over Richland in a region qualifying game during the District 2 girls basketball tournament at the Fargo Civic Center.

Maple Valley opened with a 22-8 lead after the first quarter. Abbie Tinjum led the way with three 3-pointers and 11 points in the opening quarter for the Raiders (16-6).

“We told the girls to keep working hard,” Miller said. “(Richland) had a lot of seniors so we knew they weren’t going to give up. We just said ‘don’t be timid’ and ‘don’t think this one is a win yet,’”

The win gives the Raiders a spot in the Region 1 tournament set for next Monday in Lisbon.

Eighth-grader Rylee Nudell paced Maple Valley with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

“(Rylee) works hard every time down the court and she’s not intimidated by anything,” Miller said.

Mackenzie Frankl scored 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Colts (11-11).

Tinjum finished with 12 points. Cassie Pautz added 12 points for the Raiders.
