Williston residents urge crackdown on litterbugs

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Some Williston residents are asking for stiffer penalties against litterbugs.

An existing city ordinance prohibits littering in town, and dumping your garbage on a public street can result in a $100 fine. Some say that's not enough.

Williston resident Aislinn Larson says the town is a lot dirtier than it used to be and she favors increasing the fine.

Police say the law is already difficult to enforce because offenders need to be caught in the act.

Mayor Ward Koeser says the city is behind on cleanup because of last year's long winter, but there are plans for a concentrated pickup effort.

Koeser tells the Williston Herald that another possibility is dividing the city into sections and finding sponsors who will commit to keeping certain areas clean.
