Hankinson fisherman OK after his Monte Carlo plunges through iceHANKINSON, N.D. – Authorities say a fisherman escaped unharmed when his car broke through the ice late Thursday on Lake Elsie near Hankinson.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office:
Brett Zietlow, 32, of Hankinson, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the ice at about 11 p.m. when the front of the car broke through as he got close to shore.
Zietlow got out of the car before it sank, walked to a nearby residence and got a ride to Hankinson.
Authorities didn’t learn about the incident until 8:26 a.m. today, when someone reported a vehicle had broken through the ice on the north side of Lake Elsie. The sheriff’s office and Richland County Dive Rescue team responded, but the dive team was canceled a short time later when the owner of the car called to report that no one was inside.
Damage to the car was estimated at $900.
The sheriff’s office urged people to use extreme caution on lakes and sloughs, as ice conditions vary greatly.
