Shaffer: The ‘She-volution’ continues

When I found out last fall that I would be writing for SheSays, I took pause.

I haven’t birthed any babies, I’ve yet to own a home, and my writing experience had focused mainly on breaking news coverage of tornadoes and fires or hard-news reporting on city government. What did I know about “women’s news”?

And yet, I fell in love with the section, its message to women and the kinds of stories I was writing.

I’ve covered topics from using guided imagery to heal mental illness, to tattoos, fantasy football, sexy photo shoots and wedding dresses.

I met the most interesting people of my career. And each article was unique; each topic intriguing to me on a personal level.

And it very quickly clicked. I felt empowered to tell the stories and research the issues I talk about with my friends, family and colleagues on a daily basis.

Now, I get to continue that mission as I lead SheSays into the future.

I took over as SheSays editor this month as Mary Jo Hotzler, the section’s former editor and The Forum’s deputy editor, moves up north to become editor of the Grand Forks Herald.

I’m a wife, daughter, sister, friend, aunt, working woman and granddaughter. I like nail polish, politics, punk rock, crafts, photography and fashion. I care about my health, finances, family and future. SheSays has the unique opportunity to explore these roles and issues every day in your newspaper.

In addition, SheSays has some other new faces transitioning into our mix as staff members, contributors and columnists.

We are continuing to watch for trends and research that affect your life, and our writers have other exciting projects planned for the section in the coming months.

SheSays staffers will undertake in-depth topics that are important to women, including infertility, domestic violence and mental illness. Each month, we’ll bring you a multi-part series on a separate issue.

Most importantly in the future, however, is that we will continue to cover what’s important to you and the other women in your life.

We want to hear from you, and we truly want to reflect what all of the She’s out there are Saying.
