Letter: Student athletes carry the burden over nickname

I did not go to the University of North Dakota, but I happen to like the Fighting Sioux nickname. But because I am not American Indian, no one is asking me my opinion, nor should they.

What the people of North Dakota should realize is that they might win the battle and lose the war. The NCAA guys might not even care about the North Dakota vote and outcome.

It is just a nickname, and if we don’t change it this year, it will just be an issue in the future, and I would like to think there are better things for our Legislature to keep busy with. The whole issue is being done on the backs of the student athletes: They might not play certain teams or host a playoff game or even get into a certain league, and I feel this is wrong.
