Oak Grove edges Richland to earn Region 1 berth

FARGO – Fargo Oak Grove freshman Carter Kretchman swished the go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter Monday at the Fargo Civic Center.

That long-range shot helped lift the Grovers to a 62-57 victory against Richland in a North Dakota Class B, District 2 boys basketball region-qualifying game.

“I told him ‘There was no one else I would rather have shooting those shots,’ ” Oak Grove head coach Kyle Card said.

The Grovers (13-9) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half before rallying to victory. Oak Grove earned the No. 4 seed from District 2 for the Region 1 tournament, which starts Monday.

“That was one of the goals we wanted to get,” said Card, whose team lost its top eight players off last season’s team that made the state tournament.

Kretchman sank a

3-pointer from the deep wing that gave the Grovers a 56-55 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. That basket gave Oak Grove its first lead since the first quarter.

“He’s a gutsy kid and he knocked it down,” Card said.

Jordan Funfar and Tyler Christianson combined make 6 of 6 foul shots in the final 30 seconds to ice the outcome for Oak Grove. Funfar and Christianson scored 15 points each to lead the Grovers.

Richland built a 34-19 lead after sophomore guard Kayne Griffith scored a

3-point play with 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

“We told the kids we had to gut check to see what we are made of,” Card said.
