Dragons add 27 football recruits

MOORHEAD – Dragons fans may not have to wait long to hear some new names over the public address system at Alex Nemzek Stadium.

Minnesota State Moorhead announced it added 27 players to its program, including four walk-ons, Wednesday for national signing day. Head coach Steve Laqua said as many as half the players in the class could see playing time next fall.

“I think a lot of them have the chance to compete and see the field right away,” Laqua said. “There are some definite areas that we need to get people that can play right away.”

Wide receiver, defensive back and offensive line are three positions where playing time could be had for incoming players.

The Dragons have four wide receivers on their current roster and eight offensive linemen.

Laqua was pleased with the athletes the program added at wide receiver and defensive back.

“We needed to get difference makers that would have a chance to compete to play right away,” he said. “I thought we knocked those two positions out of the park.”

Shane Siverson of West Fargo and Garrett Shelley, of Delano, Minn., are two wide receiver recruits who could push for playing right away. The 6-foot, 160-pound Siverson is also a track standout for West Fargo.

“I think he’s a diamond in the rough,” Laqua said. “He will flourish come this fall.”

Laqua said five players could battle for immediate playing time either at cornerback or safety – Korey Jacobson of Baldwin, Wis.; Jaylen Raye of Bellflower, Calif.; Nico Caramella of Murrieta, Calif.; Brandon Nelson, who played at Fargo Shanley; and Shea DeJong of Sioux Falls, S.D.

When Laqua took over the MSUM program prior to last season, he vowed to focus more on recruiting area kids. He made good on that promise. Of the 27 recruits, 14 of them are from Minnesota and seven are from North Dakota.

“There is definitely a stamp that says we believe in the student-athletes of this region,” Laqua said.

MSUM also inked Aaron Bohl, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker from Lincoln, Neb. Aaron is the son of North Dakota State head football coach Craig Bohl.

Laqua is a former NDSU player and also a former Bohl assistant coach.

Craig Bohl was in Lincoln early Wednesday for Aaron’s signing before coming back to Fargo to announce NDSU’s recruiting class in the afternoon.

“I was down in Lincoln … and it was one proud moment for me,” Craig Bohl said. “I’m really excited about Aaron’s choice and really excited about Steve Laqua leading the Dragons.”
