Autopsy: New Rockford man died of hypothermia

GRAND FORKS – An autopsy by the North Dakota medical examiner determined that Michael Hermanson died of hypothermia, Eddy County Sheriff Brandon Maygra said today.

Hermanson, 53, was found Thursday morning lying along the shoreline of Lake Coe, 20 miles east of his hometown of New Rockford, by two of his brothers, a nephew and a friend who had been searching for him.

Hermanson went ice fishing early on the morning of Jan. 23 and was last seen by a Devils Lake man fishing on Adams Lake next to Lake Coe about 2 p.m. that day.

Maygra put out a missing person notice on Hermanson last Wednesday. On Thursday morning, searchers found where his pickup truck had gone into about 20 feet of water, leaving a spare tire, propane tank and seat cushion floating in a stretch of open water.
