ND murder suspect takes stand in own defense

BISMARCK — A North Dakota man on trial for killing his friend says he was drunk but didn't mean for the stabbing to happen.

John Unruh took the stand Tuesday in the fifth day of his murder trial. He testified he had a knife in his hand during the April 2011 incident because he was trying to open the door of a bathroom in his Lincoln home where Randall Albaugh was having "loud, screaming sex" with a woman within earshot of his 10-year-old daughter.

Unruh says Albaugh came out and lunged, and Unruh put his hands up to defend himself and stabbed Albaugh in the chest. He says it happened "just in the snap of a finger."

Prosecutors point out differences between Unruh's testimony and what he told police after the stabbing.
