Spartans post 1st win in boys hoopsFARGO – It was the first win of the season for the Fargo North boys basketball team. However, it felt like so much more.
After weeks of close games, overtimes, near misses and close calls, the Spartans looked every bit as good as they thought they could be entering the season.
It was almost perfect.
Anthony Schnabel scored 26 points to help North snap a nine-game losing streak with a 61-52 Eastern Dakota Conference victory against Fargo Davies on Friday night at the Spartandome.
“It feels great to break through,” Schnabel said. “We’ve been working really hard for this.”
Schnabel was unstoppable in the first half, using a stop-and-start drive to the basket and a smooth jump shot to pour in 22 of his team’s first 31 points.
Schnabel, a senior point guard, entered the game second on the team with 13.8 points a game. He had struggled at times through the first nine games when attempting to do too much.
Friday he was loose, relaxed and played the fast-paced style of game that best suits his talents.
“That was awesome,” North coach Dan Shultis said. “For how hard these kids have worked, day in and day out, keeping their heads up, staying as positive as can be, doing the work we’re asking them to do. It’s just one, but man they have that monkey off their back.”
The Eagles cut the Spartans’ lead to 47-44 with 6:23 remaining.
Junior guard Austen Strom and senior Brady Syverson each took over the scoring role for North in the second half.
Strom came up with all of his 10 points after halftime. Syverson had each of his eight points after the intermission.
With the first one out of the way, the Spartans can’t help thinking bigger.
Maybe they could get on a roll to the end the regular season. Maybe they can make waves in the playoffs.
Confidence is high. And it’s about time.
