Eagles’ balanced attack tops North

FARGO – Basketball is a team sports, not a one-person game.

The Fargo Davies girls appear to know that better than anybody.

Alexis Bolstad scored 18 points to lead four Eagles players in double-digit scoring during a 66-44 Eastern Dakota Conference road victory against defending North Dakota Class A champion Fargo North at the Spartandome.

“We just worked as a team and pulled together,” Bolstad said. “We ran our offense and played good defense. It all just came together in the second half. It was really fun.”

Bolstad led the way for the Eagles early in the first half, scoring 10 of the team’s first 12 points.

The 6-foot-1 sophomore forward – one of five Davies regulars 6-feet tall or taller – had a pair of

3-pointers in the first half to help the Eagles to a 12-3 lead.

North clawed back by spreading the ball around. Courtney Johnson and Gabby Kosin combined for 14 of the Spartans’ 25 first-half points.

“We needed to run our offense,” Davies coach Tonah Safranski said. “We kind of played like we didn’t know what to do in the first half offensively. We were a little tentative. I thought in the second half we played a lot better. We played as a team, and it opened up things for everyone.”

Defense was the key to Davies’ second-half surge.

Eagles guards locked down their counterparts, and Davies allowed just six field goals in the half.

Everybody contributed on offense, scoring inside and outside, with jumpers, layups and at the free-throw line.

It was all working.

Davies limited North to just four points in the final 6:20.

Jasmine Moffett finished with 15, Brook Hildre and Lexi Klabo each scored 11 for Davies.

Kira Larson led North with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

“It started on defense,” Safranski said. “Our press was working tonight and I liked that. I thought our traps were great. There were a couple possessions in a row where they didn’t get the ball past half court and that helped us, sparked us and got us some easy baskets.”
