Weather Talk: Return to cold brings to mind childhood weather memoriesOur return to (somewhat) cold weather this week brings to my mind a childhood learning moment. My father mounted a thermometer inside our kitchen door that measured the outdoor temperature, and we would always check the temperature before heading outside in the morning.
Even in Alabama, the rise and fall of temperatures with wintertime weather fronts attracted my interest as a young boy. I recall one day when he announced that it was zero degrees, and I was flabbergasted until he explained that he had converted the temperature to Celsius. (The metric system was purely a scientific device at the time.)
I also vividly recall proclaiming one morning that 50 degrees was colder than 40 degrees. That particularly windy 50-degree morning seemed much colder than the previous day, when it had been 40 degrees and calm. This was during the 1960s, and the wind chill factor was not yet in common use.
