Mandaree man sentenced for assault, theft charges

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison on assault and theft charges.

Kalolo Iu, of Mandaree, pleaded guilty in October to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and theft within Indian country.

Authorities say the assault occurred in May 2011 when Iu and the victim were celebrating a family member's wedding on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The victim was hospitalized for her injuries.

Prosecutors say the thefts happened in April 2011, when Iu stole tools valued at about $4,000 from vehicles parked outside the Four Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Iu to 30 months in prison and ordered him to pay back more than $8,200.
