UND picks up win in WinnipegWINNIPEG, Man. – Winnipeg Jets co-owner Mark Chipman offered apologies to one of his team’s players on Saturday afternoon.
Jets forward Randy Jones played at Clarkson University.
“With apologies to Jonesy, I hope we steamroll them,” said Chipman, a University of North Dakota alumnus.
It wasn’t a steamrolling, but UND’s 3-1 victory in the MTS Centre was plenty satisfying for a short-handed team that won for the seventh time in nine games. It was also satisfying for several players who returned to their homeland for a regular-season game.
Canadian-born forward Carter Rowney scored two goals, while Canadian-born defenseman Dillon Simpson added two assists to help UND come back from a 1-0 first-period deficit and win the U.S. College Hockey Classic.
The 7,075 in attendance were mostly UND fans, some Jets fans and others who were curious seekers to watch the program that Winnipeg stars Jonathan Toews, Travis Zajac, James Patrick and John Marks played for.
“For a lot of us in the program who grew up in western Canada, this is a special opportunity to come back home and play here,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s a great opportunity. This is a great hockey town. You listen to the national anthem tonight and hear the crowd’s reaction. It’s a special place for hockey. We’re pretty lucky we came up and had a chance to play here.”
The game didn’t start well for UND.
Clarkson scored just 4 minutes, 11 seconds into the contest when Nick Tremblay sent a pass into the slot and Julien Cayer swatted it home for the Golden Knights.
On the first tally, Rowney took the puck from the corner and tried a wraparound. Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich, who led the NCAA in save percentage at .938 coming into the day, stopped the initial shot, but Rowney knocked it home on the second try at 9:14.
FIRST PERIOD: 1, C, Cayer (Tremblay, Tamblyn), 4:11.
SECOND PERIOD: 2, UND, Rowney (Kristo, Simpson), 9:14. 3, UND, Rowney (Mattson, Simpson), 12:32, (pp).
THIRD PERIOD: 4, UND, MacMillan (Nelson, MacWilliam), 19:02.
SAVES: C, Karpowich 7-14-11 32. UND, 6-10-5 21.
