Ward County takes first step to permit moratoriumMINOT, N.D. (AP) — The Ward County Commission on a 4-1 vote has taken the initial step toward a one-year moratorium on building permits in areas of the Souris River flood plain.
The Minot Daily News reports that commissioners want to hold off on new building and subdivision platting until more is known about flood mitigation steps in the river valley that saw record flooding last year. More than 4,000 homes and businesses in Minot alone were flooded.
Commissioner Bruce Christianson cast the lone vote against a moratorium. He says some people who understand the risks still want to build, and should be allowed to do so given the tight housing market.
Final action on the moratorium proposal is expected in early February.
