Weir powers Shanley girls basketball team past North

FARGO – The only negative to Rachel Weir’s game Tuesday night was that she fouled out, making it impossible to extend a career night even longer.

Weir scored a career-high 26 points to lift Fargo Shanley to a 65-45 Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball victory against defending North Dakota Class A champion Fargo North at McCormick Gymnasium.

“As a team we are getting better,” Weir said. “As we get better, everyone will feed off each other. It was the whole team working together. I was just able to help.”

Weir and eighth-grade point guard Sarah Jacob-son combined for 19 of the Deacons’ 29 first-half points.

When Weir wasn’t hitting hoops, the quick Jacobson was cruising around defenders or pulling up for jumpers.

Shanley forced the Spar-tans into several turnovers with a pressure-packed full-court defense throughout the game.

North made mistakes. Shanley capitalized.

Junior Kira Larson had 13 points in the first half to keep the Spartans close at halftime.

“I think if we keep work-ing hard we should be a good team,” Weir said.

A 12-2 run put the game out of reach in the second half.

Much of the damage was done by Weir, who finished with 17 points after half-time.

She nailed four shots, including a 3-pointer, and was 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.

On the other end, North struggled to get any offensive rhythm. The Spartans made just seven baskets in the second half, and were plagued by turnovers.

Larson finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kelsie Schmiess had nine points.

Jacobson had 13 points for the Deacons.

There wasn’t much of-fense from the rest of the Shanley roster. But it didn’t matter.

This team thrives on playing solid defense.

“We like playing de-fense,” Weir said. “Playing solid defense, and going hard for everything, helps our offense to go, too.”
