players are on break
Willie Fritz is giving his team a break.
The Sam Houston State head coach said he sent his team home shortly after it beat Montana last Friday in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision semifinals.
“We had a team meeting on Saturday morning and kind of tied up loose ends from the Montana game and then we sent our guys home,” Fritz said Tuesday.
The Bearkats (14-0) play North Dakota State (13-1) on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas, for the national title.
Fritz said his team will resume practice on Dec. 28 “and start getting after it then,” instead of practicing this week – the first of a three-week window before the championship.
“Sometimes I worry you practice too long and you have paralysis from over analysis,” Fritz said. “You just keep watching the tape over and over and over again.”
NDSU head coach Craig Bohl said Monday his team would have some light practices this week before taking a holiday break.
“I think it’s good to have some time off and recharge the batteries,” Fritz said. “Both teams ought to be at full strength when Jan. 7 rolls around.”
