Here's some gift ideas for your pet

When Kate Moore was a student at Savannah College of Art and Design, she was at the mercy of a roommate’s cats.

“They would jump on everything,” she says. “So we tried to come up with something to keep them from getting on all our stuff.”

So Moore developed the HabiCat, modular, wall-mounted cat furniture that can be arranged as a pet owner – or pet – likes. Priced at $250, the HabiCat comes in maple, natural or unfinished versions, and can be purchased through Griffith Designs (griffithdesigns.net).

The HabiCat was one of dozens of new pet products unveiled at the recent H.H. Backer pet trade show. Most are available now, but some are still arriving on store shelves.

Below are a few more worth noting.

Grass twine bird feeders and birdhouses

From Hugs Pet Products, they’re all natural and biodegradable. Priced at $19.95 for a two-pack or $9.95 each, they’re available through hugspetproducts.com.

Forest Javarium

Hamster habitats and bird cages get a makeover with the Javarium, from the A&E Cage Co. (aecageco.com). The company uses retired coffee trees from Indonesia in its products, making for a much softer, more interesting look than old-school habitats. The 10-gallon Javarium ($150-$160) comes complete with toys, hut and fresh pine shavings. All you add is the hamster. The 20-gallon version, for birds, comes with perches, toys and a house. It’s $225.

The Vivid flashing collar

A rechargeable collar, from The Company of Animals, it flashes, glows in the dark and reflects. There are four levels of flashing: a light-sensitive mode that kicks in when it gets dark, a slow flash, a rapid flash and permanently on. The collar gets 15 hours of continuous flashing between charges. “I’ve got a dog who runs away in the dark, so it’s nice to know where he is,” says animal behaviorist Roger Mugford, CEO of The Company of Animals. “Flashing collars, they’re all good. But the ones that require batteries are just a pain.” Priced at $24.99, it’s available at Petco or Unleashed stores or companyofanimals.us.

The Pet Wash

It looks like a fire hydrant, but remove the lid and you’ve got a kit that converts a shower into a pet-washing system. There’s a mounting clip that holds the inverted hydrant head to the shower, a 6-foot hose, a splash guard and other pieces, all for $29.99 (go to thepet-wash.com).
