Fire destroys farm buildings between Argusville and ArthurARTHUR, N.D. – A grass fire spread to a farmyard between Arthur and Argusville on Sunday, destroying two buildings and several pieces of farm equipment and damaging a third building, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Property owner Timothy Bergman was burning ditches Sunday afternoon at 16250 25th St. SE when the wind came up and spread the fire to taller grass in the farmyard, Chief Deputy Jim Thoreson said.
Firefighters from Arthur put out the grass fire, but it rekindled, and they were called back to a building fire at the same address Sunday evening.
The blaze destroyed a slaughterhouse and Quonset and their contents and caused minor damage to a third building, Thoreson said. A tractor and two pieces of farm equipment parked near the Quonset also were damaged, he said.
Firefighters from Argusville, Casselton, Gardner and Grandin provided mutual aid.
Thoreson said grass fires getting out of control is a concern with the current dry conditions.
“That’s a problem we’re going to have until we do get snow cover,” he said.
