Concordia Christmas Concert a yearly event for California couple

MOORHEAD – Carol Maul will be the first to tell you that she looks forward to the Concordia Christmas Concert every year.

So much so, in fact, that she’s willing to come all the way from California.

Maul and her husband, Ken, have made the trek from their home in Fresno, Calif., to Moorhead for the concert every year since 2007.

Before the concert on Friday night, Carol, who graduated from Concordia in 1963, said the visit to Moorhead always helps to put her in the Christmas spirit. Except, this year, there’s no snow on the ground.

“We usually bring a blizzard when we come for this,” Carol said.

“This is the first year since we started coming that there hasn’t been snow,” Ken added.

Although he didn’t go to Concordia, Ken has a personal connection to the choir as well. The first time he heard them sing was in San Francisco in the early 1970s, when he went with Carol to a concert there.

The director gave a downbeat that night, he said, “and it was a sound that I had never heard in my life.”

Ken remembers that night as a special moment with Carol. A year later, they were married, and now the two are approaching their 40th anniversary.

“All because of this choir,” Ken said, smiling.
