Not a sweet day for sugar workersFarmers, when was the last time you googled “American Crystal Sugar lockout” and hit the news tab? More than 200 stories appear. People are watching this throughout the country. People are watching, reading about and living this nightmare right here in our communities.
Imagine the conversations that happened around the Thanksgiving table. That Thanksgiving table, for the workers, might have been a little sparse this year. It is ironic that at a time when our country celebrates the bounty of a harvest, of a good day’s pay for a good day’s work, there will be less.
The company execs have told you that the lockout will not be won through the media. This is true. Yet, the media is a powerful tool that connects us along the Red River Valley.
Just as we exchange ideas in the newspaper, we also do so at the kitchen table. It is now time for you to ask company CEO Dave Berg to get back to the negotiating table to end the lockout.
