Fargo police investigate unattended death of newborn at Sanford

FARGO – Police here are investigating the unattended death of a newborn early Monday at Sanford Medical Center.

Lt. Joel Vettel said police received a call from medical personnel in the hospital’s emergency room at 3:30 a.m. about a newborn who died within the facility “in an area not monitored by medical personnel.”

Vettel said he couldn’t be more specific, citing the ongoing investigation.

Police were working with Sanford officials to determine what happened and also have interviewed non-medical personnel at the facility, Vettel said.

Police didn’t disclose whether the child’s parents or others were nearby when the child died.

The newborn’s body was sent to the state medical examiner in Bismarck for an autopsy, Vettel said.

“The cause of death will determine where we go from here,” he said.

Darren Huber, a Sanford spokesman, said officials at Sanford are working closely with law enforcement but can’t comment due to the ongoing investigation.
