Roche helps Fargo North finish second and ND state swimming

GRAND FORKS – Ellie Roche was at it again for Fargo North.

Roche secured a victory in the 100 breaststroke, helping the Spartans to a second-place finish at the North Dakota state girls swimming and diving championships Saturday at Hyslop pool.

West Fargo’s Danica Dutt grabbed a victory in the 100 butterfly, defeating second-place Emily Roche of Fargo North by nearly three full seconds.

Grand Forks Central’s Ali Church dominated the 200 and 500 freestyle races Saturday afternoon in the same manner she’s conquered those two events throughout her career.

Church won the 200 freestyle by more than six seconds and the 500 freestyle by more than 10 seconds .

Church was named senior athlete of the year.

“She deserves it,” Grand Forks coach Bryan Walls said. “She is a straight-A student, she is responsible and she works hard. We will definitely miss having her in the program.”

Church had some familiar company on the awards stand. Grand Forks placed four swimmers in the top eight in the 200 freestyle, and took the top four spots in the 500 freestyle.

“This was a great year,” Church said. “I am so proud of everyone on the whole team. It was wonderful.”

Grand Forks’ dominance of the distance events isn’t a new trend. A Grand Forks swimmer has been crowned state champion in both events in eight of the last nine years.

“It has become a tradition for us to do well in those events,” Walls said. “It really started with (Hannah) Whitehead, and Ali has continued it. They have made it a real honor to swim those events, and we have some younger swimmers that are ready to continue this tradition.”

Bismarck Century won the team title, finishing with 352 points.
