Wagner: Motivation can be tough to come by this time of year

There’s something about this time of year.

Daylight fades, the air outside has a little more bite to it and the aroma of wood-burning stoves offers a nostalgic reminder of years gone by.

Soon, we’ll set our clocks back an hour for the end of daylight saving time, and signs of the upcoming holidays will decorate yards, store aisles and flash across the TV.

Those sensory-filling reminders offer a glimpse of nostalgia. But, at least for me, it’s also probably the toughest time of the year to run.

First, it seems tougher to get out of bed, especially when it’s dark and cold outside. Then, if you’re like me, you have to decide what to wear because I rarely line up my clothes the night before.

If you’ve run several races, an assortment of marathons and short local races, it’s tough to find the motivation to run. Add on the ramp up to the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons – which offer a dizzying assortment of treats and tastes – it’s easy to put off training.

That’s one reason a winter race, in a warm climate, can be a great motivational tool. It keeps you training – especially if you start thinking about the money you’ll spend to get there – while giving us northerners a break from the cold. And if you’re going to spend the money to get there, why not run your best?

Best of luck in training to the area runners planning to run P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Arizona.

The race will be mid-January, and there’s a large contingent of Fargo-Moorhead runners heading south.

Mankato madness

Earlier this month, the Mankato Marathon celebrated its second year and some F-M runners ran in it.

Congratulations to Fargo’s Zachary Schroeder and Moorhead’s John Ellingsberg, Eric Wayne and Wynter Anderson for completing the marathon. Area runners William Keating, Kate Gronewold, Matt Stith, Bruce Schoenwald, Lisa Edison-Smith, David Hogenson, Zach Staples and Janine Staples finished the half marathon.

Upcoming races

There are a couple races you may want to sign up for.

The popular Full Moon 5K, sponsored by the Fargo Running Co., will be Nov. 10. Find out more information by visiting the store or online at www.fargorunningcompany.com/FM2011reg.pdf.

The Dilworth VFW will host a Veteran’s Day 5K on Nov. 12. Visit online at www.active.com/running/dilworth-mn/veterans-day-5k-runwalk-2011 for more information.
