Weather Talk: Weather forecasting divided into the why and the whatWeather forecasting can be divided into two categories: why and what. There is an old joke within the weather community that we are in marketing, not production. In other words, we try to tell you what is going to happen, but why that weather is going to occur is outside of our control.
Although we obviously cannot control the weather, most, if not all, meteorologists spend their time analyzing the why in weather. Our television and radio audience seems to be divided between the people who only want to know what the weather is going to do and the people who not only want to know what, but also why the weather is going to change.
If you are someone who wants to know the why aspect of weather, time restraints often do not always allow us to elaborate as to why certain weather is expected. But this daily column does give us another outlet to explain the daily happenings of our weather, and if you ever have a question, please write to us at the address below.
