Cause of mysterious smell still unknown in MandanMANDAN, N.D. — Something smells periodically in the city of Mandan, N.D., and residents haven't been able to pinpoint the source.
City officials say Tuesday that they're still not sure what caused a strong odor reported last week by the Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/oLCV4B). The odor had wafted into the city through its southeast borders. People complained, the paper reported, but no one has been able to figure out what caused the foul stench.
Officials had said the smell could be connected to the weekly sale at Kist Livestock, or to the spreading of manure by the company on nearby rural properties, but a city worker today says the source has remained a mystery.
Mandan is about six miles northwest of Bismarck and is home to fewer than 20,000 residents.
