New strategy pays off for Lachowitzer

MOORHEAD – In many ways, Saturday’s East Region girls cross country meet was a replay of last year for Fargo Davies senior Tarin Lachowitzer.

She wrote “Believe” on her arm, like she does for every big meet. She was the favorite to win. She had a plan of how she wanted to attack the course.

However, Lachowitzer admitted to being much more nervous about the outcome on Saturday. And she completely changed her game plan during the race.

But she still produced outstanding results.

Lachowitzer, the two-time defending North Dakota Class A state girls cross country champion, earned the second East Region title of her career with a personal-best time of 14 minutes, 39.90 seconds at Johnson Park. Davies won the team title for the second-consecutive season with 25 points. West Fargo was a distant second at 72, and Fargo North was third with 81.

“I really wanted to get in the 14:40’s this time to get close to my personal record,” Lachowitzer said. “I didn’t really know where I was at with the time, I was just going for it and hoping that I was close. I’m so excited.”

In a departure from her usual strategy, Lachowitzer hung behind race leader Alex Backlund for much of the start of the race.

In previous races, Lachowitzer bolted to the front after getting a feel for the competition and the race conditions a few minutes after the start.

Lachowitzer decided to let Backlund, a fast-starting and talented sophomore, set the pace for more than a mile.

When Backlund began to fade, Lachowitzer turned on the speed for the final stretch.

She earned the win by 17 seconds over second-place Madeline Strandemo of Fargo South. Carly Bertsch of Davies was third, Katie Bye of Davies was fourth and Backlund was fifth.

“I think with a good race like this I will have a little more confidence in me to push a little harder,” said Lachowitzer, whose previous personal best was 14:42.

Lachowitzer was named East Region senior athlete of the year. Davies coach Lisa Svaleson was named coach of the year.

The Eagles, the defending Class A girls champions in just their second year of varsity competition, received outstanding performances throughout the lineup.

Davies had six finishers in the top 10, and seven in the top 14. The top 20 are named to the all-conference team.

Senior Kelsey Zastoupil, and eighth-graders Erica Johnson and McKenna Vetter placed 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively.

The Class A and Class B state cross country meet is scheduled for Oct. 22 at Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo.

“They ran very strong as a team,” Svaleson said. “We had some great packs throughout the race, which was exciting to see. That is always what we strive for, to have the kids race in groups. We are really gearing up for a strong finish at the state meet. We want to have some strong performances there.”
