Future of flood-threatened Churchs Ferry up in the air

CHURCHS FERRY, N.D. — The few remaining residents in the North Dakota town of Churchs Ferry are divided over the future of the flood-threatened community.

Four of the town's nine voting-age residents have petitioned the Ramsey County Commission for an election to decide whether to continue as an incorporated city.

The federal government bought out most Churchs Ferry residents in 2000 because of the flood threat from the rising Devils Lake. Only about a dozen people still live in the town along U.S. Highway 2. Two households want to keep the city intact; the other two want to disband.

County officials plan to bring in a mediator to see if differences can be resolved that way.
