Morast: A whole new Variety

You want to know the hardest part about planning and starting a new section in a newspaper? It’s coming up with the name.

No choice is universally appreciated. Most are met with distaste.

That’s why we went with the obvious for Variety, because it’s going to have a little bit of everything in here.

Well, not really “everything.” I mean, don’t expect stories on the mating rituals of albino aardvarks.

However, we do want to fill the pages of this section with the full spectrum of entertainment, events, arts and culture in the Fargo-Moorhead area. In our minds, that’s everything from concerts to art exhibits to the latest at-home entertainment options like new iPads or family gaming systems.

We want Variety to be a guide to your leisure-time options, and we won’t be bashful about telling you what we think is worthwhile. But we also want Variety to be a dialogue between us and the readers. We want your feedback; tell us what we missed or things you’re excited about – whether that’s an upcoming concert or a street performer in south Moorhead who blew your mind.

Some of this will be new. Some of Variety will also be very familiar. We’ll still have the popular Weekend Watch feature in our Thursday section. And Fridays in Variety will continue to be the day for movie reviews.

Some familiar faces will be here, too; John Lamb’s column will run on Wednesdays, and mine will still run on Fridays.

One thing that will be different is the schedule. Variety will only be printed five days a week, Monday through Friday.

We’ll be aiming to fill those days with as much intriguing and interesting content as we can. And if you think we’re lacking in any way, please contact me.

Just don’t bring up the name.
