Portraits: “Buckskin” Harlan Bendickson
“Buckskin” Harlan Bendickson of Moorhead ties on his chaps for an evening as “Cowboy Buck” on Friday at the Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch east of Glyndon, Minn. Next, he’ll start a fire, get his training lassos out and heat some water over the fire to prepare for the pumpkin patch’s opening. “We do little trick ropes. I cook up some rattlesnake stew and tell stories,” Bendickson says. But is it real rattlesnake? “It is, to 5-year-old kids,” Bendickson says with a grin. He’s on his eighth year of performing the role for the children who visit the pumpkin patch. It originally started on Highway 26 but moved to the banks of the Buffalo River to expand. “I’ve been in the horse business all my life, and they were looking for something for me to do when they opened this place, so we found this old wagon and started from there,” Bendickson says.
