Mitchell teen charged with DUI, hit-and-run after crash

MITCHELL, S.D. - A 19-year-old Mitchell man was arrested this weekend after an early-morning run-in with a windmill.

Miguel Tovar was arrested and charged with drunken driving, open container in a motor vehicle, underage consumption of alcohol and hit-and-run, according to Mitchell Police Sgt. David Beintema.

Tovar, who was driving a 2004 gray Cadillac, reportedly went over a curb and struck a decorative windmill at the entrance to a mobile home court at 1220 E. Havens at 7:28 a.m. Saturday. He attempted to drive away, according to police, but the crash flattened a tire and left his vehicle in no condition for a swift exit, said Beintema, who responded to the call.

Tovar was detained and then arrested a short ways from the scene of the crash. He was not in the Davison County Jail Sunday night.

The decorative windmill was destroyed in the crash, Beintema said.

It was one of two hit-and-runs reported to Mitchell Police Saturday, but the only one to end up in the books.

A man went to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital and reported he had been struck by a car, Beintema said. When an officer responded, the man declined to cooperate and provide any details.

As the officer was leaving, the man said he had made the accident up, according to Beintema. No charges were filed.
