Firefighters mopping up forest fire near Ely, Minn.ELY, Minn. — Firefighters are mopping up at the scene of a forest fire near Ely in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Daria Day, a spokeswoman for the incident management team, said Wednesday that two days of burnout operations have sharply reduced the threat of the fire spreading out of the BWCA and threatening homes along the Fernberg Road east of Ely.
Day says around 100 firefighters are on the fire. They plan to use helicopters to drop water on hot spots Wednesday while ground crews set spot fires to remove unburned wood and brush to secure the fire line.
Lightning started the Pagami Creek Fire around Aug. 18. Day says conditions are expected to remain very dry for the next few weeks, and paddlers are urged to be careful with their campfires.
