Wagner: Area runners focus on being their best

Fargo

Several weeks ago, a college buddy invited me to join him and some friends at the downtown Fargo YMCA for a long run.

In need of a little motivation, it didn’t take long to learn this was a group of talented and inspirational runners – nearly all of them preparing for fall marathons.

One week, we gathered early to carpool to Detroit Lakes, Minn., for a 20-mile training run. Along the way, I hoped to find out more about what motivates them and how they’ve improved.

This past Saturday, it became evident the running boom in Fargo-Moorhead has several layers to it.

Many in this group have been running for at least a few years. Their focus isn’t just on running, but being their best.

For some, one of common bond has been participating in “Faster. Stronger. Runner.” a training program designed to help area runners of all abilities maximize their potential.

The idea took hold about a year ago after several people asked Jenny Aune and Marilyn Laliberte to start a training group.

Aune said the pair started FSR to help runners get stronger and faster while staying injury free.

“So many runners get injured to weak hip/core muscles,” she said. “FSR focuses on strengthening them in a fun environment.”

The first 12-week session helped runners prepare for the Fargo Marathon, providing structured runs, hip/core strengthening exercises and educational discussions on a variety of topics.

“The 12-week programs are great for those gearing up for a race,” Aune said.

This summer, FSR also offered three-week summer camps – a sampler of sorts for those wanting to learn more about improving their running.

Aune said each session has had about 40 members.

“We have had some great feedback with people reporting lots of PR’s,” she said. “We have had so much fun this past year watching people get stronger and develop some great running friends along the way.”

The next 12-week FSR session, which offers group runs on Wednesdays and instructional/strengthening workouts on Fridays, start Sept. 21.

Registration forms are available at several area locations, including Fargo Y locations, Sanford Power Center and on the FSR Training Group’s Facebook page.
