2012 dropout Pawlenty a no for Senate

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is definitively ruling out a 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate after ending his bid for the White House a few days ago.

Pawlenty told The Associated Press in an email Wednesday that he won't challenge Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar. His comment squelches the hopes of some state GOP leaders who saw an opportunity to recruit a top-flight Senate candidate after Pawlenty dropped out of the presidential race on Sunday.

Pawlenty ended his campaign after finishing third in an Iowa Republican straw poll. He had spent many months and millions building his campaign following two terms as governor.

He says he hasn't decided what career options he'll pursue next.

Former state Rep. Dan Severson is the only Republican in the race against the first-term Klobuchar.
