Sex offender, living near the river in downtown Fargo, registers with police

FARGO – A high-risk sex offender, convicted twice for possessing child pornography, is living near the Red River in downtown Fargo.

Jesse James Syverson, 24, is required to register as a sex offender and has told police he is homeless. Sgt. Joel Vettel said Syverson is staying near the river east of Second Street and Third Avenue North.

The location is near a bike path along the river and across the street from the Howard Johnson Inn and Sidestreet Grille & Pub.

Syverson, convicted in 2008 on two separate counts of possessing child pornography in North Dakota’s Burleigh County, is maintaining regular contact with the Fargo Police Department, Vettel said in a release.

The North Dakota Risk Assessment Committee has determined he is a high risk to reoffend.

Syverson stands 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs 201 pounds and has blue eyes and brown hair. He is required to register for life.

Fargo police said a community notification meeting has not been scheduled to discuss Syverson's history with the public.
