Breckenridge gets it done at Legion tournament
Breckenridge scored seven runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat Barnesville 7-3 at Bob Marshall Field.
“It is always nice to get that top seed going into districts,” said Breckenridge center fielder Stephan Erlandson. “It was one of our team goals coming into the season, not just to advance to districts, but to also win the sub-district.”
The game was delayed twice due to lightning in the vicinity of the ballpark.
“It was frustrating because we were down at the time and we were kind of anxious to get going,” said Erlandson, whose team was down 2-0 during the delays. “It is a mandatory thing and they had to do it, but it would have been nice if we could have kept playing.”
Breckenridge will represent the South as the No. 1 seed in the district tournament scheduled to start Wednesday in Red Lake Falls, Minn. Barnesville will be the No. 2 seed.
“It is awesome,” said Breckenridge head coach Kevin Hiedeman. “I can’t remember the last time Breckenridge was a No. 1 seed, if ever. It is a big deal for us and it is an honor for the kids, they played great all year. I’m just happy to see them win.”
Barnesville started the scoring with two runs in the second inning. That lead was maintained until the sixth.
With one out and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Erlandson hit a three-run double to give Breckenridge the lead.
“Coach had me take a strike before I swung,” Erlandson said. “I got a 1-1 curve ball right over the middle and tattooed it.”
Barnesville put together a scoring threat, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell short by only pushing one run across the plate.
Hiedeman says the Breckenridge pitching rotation will be at full-strength for the district tournament.
“Nobody threw a lot of pitches in the tournament. We spread it around and pitched four kids,” he said. “We should be very healthy going into it and our arms should be in good shape.”
Prior to the championship game, Hawley defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 9-6. The loss ends D-G-F’s season. Hawley advances to the district tournament.
